Effect of conviction

The effect of conviction is that a person is no longer a free citizen whose fate going forward is now determined by whatever sentence is imposed.
The imposition of a prison sentence means the person moves from the control of the court to the control of corrective services. It is therefore essential that any special medical or other conditions are placed on the record prior to sentence and any relevant paperwork is available for handover to corrective services staff. Convicted persons subsequently seeking admission to certain professions or appointment to corporate positions should seek legal advice prior to making any application including persons given a non-conviction order.
